Here’s a classic off Squarepusher‘s iconic ‘Ultravisitor‘. Possibly my favorite album of his, it is pure intensity and passion combined with Jenkinson’s terrifyingly brilliant instrumental prowess. This is one of those songs that is already stuck in my head the moment I open my eyes. Tom Jenkinson is absolutely one of the greatest musicians of all time.
Digging deeper into Uppermost’s catalogue it is apparent that his skill as a producer extends far beyond the obvious electro-house label. This track, off the Underground Life EP, is an epic orchestral electro piece that makes me wish he would score a movie.
Well, as predicted I’m thoroughly into Hecq at the moment. This track is the stunning opener to his new album ‘Avenger’. I could easily post the whole album its that good. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.
Back on the classics kick, here’s one from the Bytes LP released by Black Dog Productions in 1992.
This guy is a genius, pure and simple. A master bass guitarist, drummer and programmer, blurring the lines between electronic and instrumental music and fusing jazz, drum and bass, IDM and who knows how many styles of music.
His concepts of music, mind and machine are truly fascinating. Here are a couple of his essays on the WATMM (We are the music makers) forum. And here’s something Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) wrote about his debut album; Feed Me Weird Things, which I found fascinating.
Alright, next up in the classics department is Autechre (pronounced aw-TEK-ər ). Eggshell is off their 1993 debut Incunabula, a word which refers to early printed books; specifically those printed before 1501.
Autechre formed in 1987 and is still performing and recording today. Their latest release, Oversteps, came out on Warp records early last year. Some of their earliest releases were under the alias Lego Feet, and they have also been associated with the project Gescom.
This track is truly a classic, and exemplifies the long form composition found in much of electronic music.
